HOW TO TEST TRANSMISSION NOISE FOR FORD FG BA BF AU EL

I get asked many times per year "i think that my transmission is noisy''...most of the time their refering to Ford Falcons,Fairlanes and LTD's. The BTR 4 speed automatic transmission which Ford BA-BF-AU-FG-EL and Ford Territories come out with can suffer from (gearset failure or accelerated wear)if this turns out to be the case, a transmission rebuild or recondition is rerquired.

So how can we diagnose such a noise?...well it's quite simple... 4 Speed auto transmissions can only produce gear noise in 1st,2nd and 4th gear.3rd gear is always silent as no sun gears or planetary gears are in driving motion.

Locked clutch drums is suppling the drive in 3 rd gear. So it's as simple as driving your car and locking it into 3rd via the t-bar or sports mode shift and listening for any noise, if you can hear a grinding sound it must be coming from the differential or front wheel bearings.
